MA thesis student Sarah Stevens recently gave a plenary presentation at the Alternative Visions in Media Conference at Texas Christian University in early November. Her presentation was entitled, Rope Sluts, and Bottoms, and Subs Oh My: Masochistic Femininity and Feminist Kink Porn. The presentation examined shifting paradigms in feminist discourse on female sexual submission in the context of the 50 Shades of Grey phenomenon and the rise of feminist porn.

Sarah more specifically studied feminist pornographer Madison Young’s 50 Shades of Dylan Ryan (2013) in order to argue that feminist discourse on women’s sexuality both frame representations of female submission and also contribute to their carnal effect. She further argued that by embedding the discourse around 50 Shades of Grey within the film text itself, Young’s film re-imagines the dualities that have traditionally dominated feminist culture critique.
