The 42nd Athens International Film and Video Festival came to a premature end last Thursday, April 9 due to a power outage caused by heavy thunderstorms. Despite the early finish, this year's festival was able to pack eleven international features, over 215 competition films, including documentaries, narratives, features, shorts, and animated films, and four presentations by accomplished guest artists into a week of enjoyment for moviegoers in Athens, Ohio.
Among the films screened were two by Ohio University film professors, eight from current OU Film students, and twelve from OU Film alumni. Two OU Film alumni were recognized with awards from this years festival. Tony Buba (M.F.A. '76) won third place in the feature documentary category for his film Ghosts of Amistad, and Matt Filmore (M.F.A. '14) received an honorable mention in the same category for the film Living Stateless, which he co-directed with Vila Somiah. For a full list of festival award winners, click here.
This was also the last festival for festival director, Ruth Bradley, who will be retiring this year. Her passion for the festival and her eye for programming have been the backbone of this event for over two decades.
